IV and EV training has been a mainstay of Pokémon games for most of the series, but Pokémon Legends: Arceus breaks with that tradition. With neither IV nor EV, Legends: Arceus has a new way to determine Pokémon stat growth. It's not changed for change's sake, but as a new gimmick that fits well with game design.

IVs and EVs represent personal value and effort value. IV is an internal modification to the Pokémon stats that are unique to each Pokémon. EV is a cumulative correction value that rises based on the Pokémon's battle history. For example, defeating Geodude will provide Defense EV, while Machop will provide Attack EV. Stats with high IV and EV will grow much more than stats with low IV and EV. Normally IVs and EVs are hidden, but some recent additions like Sword Shield's IV Checker can reveal them to players. IVs can even be passed on through breeding if one of the parent Pokémon holds a Fate Knot. With so many details, training and breeding of IVs and EVs have always been an important part of the Pokémon competitive scene.

As Legend: Arceus changed many other things in the series specs, this method of determining stats also changed. IV and EV simply do not exist in Pokémon Legends: Arceus. Instead, they've all been replaced by a new statistic called effort level. Just like IV and EV, Effort Levels help improve Pokémon's stats - higher effort levels for a particular stat yield higher results. With Pokémon Legends: Arceus leveling up a lot of previously poor Pokémon, the extra stats are certainly appreciated. Additionally, effort levels are clearly displayed and easy to check, unlike IV and EV which are often hidden and difficult for players to measure.

Effort levels in Pokémon Legends: Arceus replace EV and IV

Unlike inborn IVs and combat-based EVs, Legends: Arceus has a completely different approach to leveling up effort. By using fortitude items, the player can increase the effort level of the selected attribute. Reaching higher effort levels requires more powerful grit items. For example, a Pokémon that doesn't have an effort level in its stats can use grit to boost it but requires rarer grit stones to maximize a stat's effort value. Raising the Effort level is easy to do, it just requires the player to collect the correct grit items. Although Pokémon Legends: Arceus is no ordinary Pokémon game, managing your Pokémon stats is still important.

As for why IVs and EVs were replaced with effort, there is a simple explanation. IV and EV are breeding and training-centric mechanisms. In Pokémon Legends: Arceus, however, there is no breeding mechanic, and proper Pokémon training is still very niche. IV and EV were most likely discovered later in the series timeline, meaning they would not be known in the Emerald Age. As a result, a simpler effort level system took its place. Effort levels are easy to calculate and advance through easy-to-find items, so they make sense as a lower-tech alternative to EVs and IVs. Similar to Legends: Arceus' Linking Cord, Effort Levels are a great innovation in gaming. You can Buy Shiny Pokemon PLA here.

The effort is another mechanic that sets Pokémon Legends: Arceus apart from other games in the series, but it fits the game perfectly. It makes training Pokémon easier than ever and makes sense in the setup. Pokémon Legends: Arceus has a lot of innovations in the series, and the effort level is one of the better ones.
