The action of the five nights at freddy's game takes place within an office, and the player's only way to see the animatronic figures is through monitoring the surveillance cameras that are spread out across the restaurant at many different spots. The player has a limited amount of power to perform actions such as watching the camera feeds, turning on the lights in the hallways, and shutting the doors that are positioned on each side of them.

To avoid being attacked by the animatronics, the player must make use of the facility's entrances and the camera feed points that are scattered throughout the building. In the event that the player is unable to achieve this objective, they will be surprised, and the game will be judged to have been finished. The player has to make it through the period between midnight and six in the morning without dying in order to go to the next night (8 minutes and 37 seconds in real-time).
